Note: “Tomato Tree” tomato plants will grow to about 8 feet so you’ll need a large pot, but they produce jumbo juicy red tomatoes as big as grapefruits!

growing tomatoes in pots is very convenient, you can grow them in decorative gardens, patios and even on balconies. Here is a list of things you should know when growing tomatoes in pots.

How to grow tomatoes in pots:

Tomatoes should be planted in rich soil, recieve full sun and plenty of water. Place your tomato pots somewhere they can be easily cared for. If you decide to buy the “Tomato Tree” variety, you should stake them as they will grow very high.
Try to get deep pots for your tomatoes. The little hairs on the stem will actually turn into roots if you plant your tomatoes in a deep pot, which will give your plant a huge head-start with it’s root structure.

Your potted tomatoes will be big feeders. If you are worried about overfeeding I suggest you feed them regularly but lightly – about half the amount listed on the directions but a higher frequency. You can use pre-mixed foods or fish emulsion if you want to feed your tomatoes organically.
Protect your tomatoes from aphids and white fly. As you are growing tomatoes in pots it should be easy to keep an eye-out for insects. You can wash them off with a blast of water and spray them with insecticidal soap. The insects will return however, so wash your tomato plants regularly.

Hopefully growing tomatoes in pots will be successful for you after reading these simple tips. Remember to choose the right variety of tomato for your circumstances.

If you have the room for a large tomato plant I would highly recommend the “Tomato Tree” as I have had some fantastic tomatoes from this variety. It’s easy to look after and it’s given me more tomatoes than any other variety I’ve grown.
